Balaclava Modern Farmhouse
Balaclava Modern Farmhouse
A majestic rural oasis just a 20-minute drive to heart of Vancouver’s downtown, this modern farm house situated on 1.1 acres. Originally designed in the French Country style, it features 25 feet of folding doors to integrate to its exterior. Out door furniture by Kettal and Royal Bottania include a 20-foot pavilion to for dining al fresco and three separate outdoor seating areas all with custom fire pits and large umbrellas for sun and rain protection. We installed a new Boffi kitchen to complement Miele, Wolf and Sub Zero appliances. Shower surrounds in the washrooms include waterproof art panels by Alex Terco Designs.
Carnarvon
Carnarvon
This sprawling modern house designed by iconic west-coast architect Douglas Simpson has undergone many iterations and renovations since it was built in the mid sixties. The goal for this renovation was to give its owner — enthusiastic cook and entertainer — an expansive kitchen and dining room and to create a casual relaxed atmosphere for family and friends.
Bonpoint Vancouver
Bonpoint Vancouver
Completed in 2018, Bonpoint Vancouver was designed in the French boutique style. A light and airy two-tone colour pallet is enhanced by free-standing mid-century furniture, fun playful plush characters and cozy area rugs to conceptually induce the idea of a home away from home. Above, cloud-like pendants and a feature ceiling sculpture soften the overall aesthetic of the space. Below, brushed engineered flooring are customized with an antique stain.
Collingwood
Collingwood
The goal for Collingwood was to construct a lock-and-leave inner city dwelling ideal for a family or possibly a couple ready to downsize but still not wanting to ride an elevator. Priority one was to design a house within the context of Kitsilano’s beach community but add a modern slant. Kits is a RS 5 neighbourhood which requires a design that’s contextual within the area, posing added challenges when building a modern structure. Priority two was to make use of the entire lot by investing heavily in indoor-outdoor integration. This meant orienting the front door on the 120-foot side of the lot versus the 33 foot side. The result was a completely private courtyard in the typically under utilized front yard, enclosed by a 12-foot hedge.
Eventide
Eventide
New to Beach Avenue, Eventide illustrates unparalleled urban design while setting a new precedent for luxury at English Bay. The modern, four-story building features three contemporary residences: the Beach House, the View House and the two-level Penthouse. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows provide ample natural light and seamless lines of sight to the ocean views and all units feature modern kitchens Gaggenau and Miele appliances, under-mount Franke stainless steel sinks and Dornbracht fixtures. Bathrooms and ensuites include Dolomite stone and white Corian countertops.
Southwest Marine Drive
Southwest Marine Drive
A challenging job for a couple with more than enough personality to fill five houses this size, this house on Marine Drive was a duplex needed to be combined into single-family. The busy family of eight moved in to the west wing while the east was being renovated. A year later, they moved in to the east wing and six month later, the wall came down and East and West was reunited.
West 30th Avenue II
West 30th Avenue II
This coastal house has panoramic views of downtown, the ocean and mountains, enhanced through expansive glass walls, detailed to eliminate the line between interior and exterior, and provide a seamless transition to large decks and a ground level garden, with lap pool and two freestanding pavilions—cabana and garage. A connection to the natural setting informs the choice of exterior materials, yellow cedar siding, concrete and glass; with exposed concrete and wood throughout the interior. The site slopes two floors from the street entry to the lane-accessed garage, with a north-east orientation to the view and garden. The house is notched at the north corner to increase sunlight to the garden and avoid obstructing neighbours’ views. Contextual zoning regulations in this neighbourhood discourage contemporary design. We kept the neighbours happy by designing a modest, low-scale to the street that conforms to high ratio of solid wall to window guidelines. Glazing on the front elevation provides views from the front through to the mountains and, combined with roof glazing, brings south light deep into the house.
